HENRY BAER

March 10, 2021 by Leanne

LAID AT REST

Funeral of Prominent Resident of the First Ward Held From Catholic Church Tuesday Morning.

Henry Baer, for years a prominent resident of the First ward, and previous to that time one of the most extensive agriculturists of Dahlgren, quietly breathed his last at the family home in this city, Saturday evening, September 29, 1917, following an illness of about eight months’ duration. Until about a month or so ago he was able to be up and about, but his ailment was of such a nature that the end might be expected at any time and his death caused no great surprise among the people of this city.

Henry Baer was born on the old Baer farm in Dahlgren, Aug. 12, 1858, and at the time of his death had passed his 59th birthday. He grew to manhood in Dahlgren and was married to Miss Mary Gothmann at Carver, May 10, 1881. They took up farming on the old homestead and lived there continuously until their removal to this city about ten years ago. He was a successful farmer and tilled one of the finest places in the county. For many years he was prominent in that township and a leader in the affairs of the community. After his removal to this city he engaged in the meat market business in company with his sons, the present Baer Bros., meat market being the outgrowth of the business. Last spring he began ailing and consulted the best medical practitioners in the cities, with but little success. At that time also he discontinued work and during the past two months his decline had been marked. Possessed of a rugged constitution he was the picture of health and it seems almost impossible to believe that a man of such fine physical build should be called beyond so quickly and at so young an age. But, the hand that actuates everything, knows no master.

Deceased is survived by his devoted wife and eight children, namely: Mrs. Dora Bastyr, St. Paul; Henry G. Baer, Forest Lake; Miss Mayme Baer, at home; John Baer, Mrs. Anna Burkhart, Chaska; William and Miss Florence Baer, at home; and Mrs. Rose Soley, Chaska. The sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends is extended to them in their deep sorrow. Besides the above he is survived by two brothers, William and Henry Baer of Frazee, Minn., and one sister, Mrs. Adolph Jacobs of Pelican Rapids.

The funeral took place Tuesday forenoon at 9:30 o’clock from the Guardian Angel’s Catholic church, the Rev. Fr. Germain conducting the solemn requiem high mass in the presence of a host of sorrowing relatives and acquaintances from far and near. Interment was in the Catholic cemetery. The St. Joseph’s Society, of which the deceased had been a member, escorted the remains to their last resting place. May he rest in peace.
